Flexible Schedule

Parents can choose any 2, 3, 4, or 5 days per week that are convenient. Kindergarteners must attend at least 3 days per week. They meet separately each morning as a class to work on social and academic skills aimed specifically toward entrance into first grade the following year.

Class Sizes

There are two classes of 24 children, each supervised by a certified teacher and two teacher’s aides. These ‘home rooms’ contain a mixed age grouping of 3 year olds, 4 year olds, and 5 year olds. The children alternate between activities designed for the entire group such as songs, exercises, and roll call; and snack and lessons prepared for smaller sub-groups which are formed according to age and ability. Kindergarteners have their own meeting time to enable us to closely monitor their progress and readiness for first grade.

The combination of time spent with mixed ages and with small groups of peers allows for the social and emotional development of each child at a comfortable pace. Learning takes place in a pressure free environment, resulting in a positive self-image and forming the foundation for future successes.
Our Program

Our program is based on the belief that learning is best accomplished when it is fun for the child. The school is filled with learning centers which are carefully conceived to arouse the child’s interest in letters, numbers, and eventually all the readiness skills. The social aspects of learning are emphasized, such as how to play with peers, how to make good decisions, how to respond to discipline and related concepts. It is a program designed to meet the needs of each individual child.

The Curriculum

Our curriculum follows a unit schedule. The topics covered are those which help your children understand themselves and the world around them. Some of the areas we learn about are self-concept, friendship, safety, weather, space, insects, dinosaurs and many more.

Within each unit we incorporate numbers and counting, letters and sounds, songs and games, stories, cooking and arts and crafts. These units are broken down into tasks and presented to the children at their developmental level. For example, during our color unit the entire school (ages 3 years to 6) will be learning about color. Our young developmental group will be sorting and naming colored objects, while our older developmental group will be mixing primary colors and recording secondary colors on a chart. At the same time there are groups going on to meet the needs of the children in between.

Math and Reading

Our math and reading programs are also developmental in nature and are taught in small groups. Part of our math program is called “Math Their Way.” This method stresses real life mathematical experiences. The children become involved with concrete materials such as tiles, pattern blocks, unifix cubes, geoboards, collections and more. Over the year the children will work with patterns, sorting and classifying, graphing, measurement and problem solving. Math concepts are taught as part of each unit theme we explore.

In order to encourage an interest in reading we use several different approaches. Time is spent each day reading to the children from age appropriate literature. In addition, New Morning students participate in regular phonics instruction paired with the “whole language” approach which includes Big Books and writing process activities. These programs emphasize the enjoyment of reading.

As with our unit curriculum, these math and reading programs are flexible enough to be understood by our youngest nursery students and challenging to our most advanced kindergarteners.
